I believe that as long as we're living and not retired from work, VLSI will exist but the technologies used will vary till scaling reaches saturation! After I'm 60 years old I won't care about working anymore...Maybe before that even

The VLSI is faded to another Moore's law. The physical technology has proven we need even more reducing size, but the bottleneck is not over processor, but inside items such as memory wall, compiler tools, improving OS and so on. People believe in increase the processor speed and reducing the area. We have reached a great success on it, however, another outlines must be reviewed, detailed, in order to reach another tech revolution, another Moore's law. A great example that improved the speed up performance of computers is the solid state drive. Scientists will figure out the future of VLSI Engineers.

An engineer concerned about job security would do well to think more like a businessman.

Because every economic downturn leads many 'little guys' start their own business.

Large industries may get the contracts, and have the high tech research and development...

But there is still opportunity for a guy with a concept.

Hard work and good performance in a company does not guarantee immunity from the next round of layoffs.

Do you have great ideas? It's a question whether to submit ideas to your higher-ups. Because a boss has to think about his own job security.

Bosses are as likely to squelch a subordinate as to put his good ideas to use. Or as likely to take credit for your good idea even if he does use it.

So can you make your own headway in a field that needs development?

What fields need someone with knowledge and ingenuity?

What does the man on the street clamor for?

What services are high-priced? Can you do it for less?

Example, photovoltaic panels can be homemade but not commercial quality. Can you do better?

Example, data recovery services charge extreme prices to remove a platter from a defective drive and install it in another device to extract data. Could you make a method to let you charge less for this service? Or make a method somewhere in between that and using recovery software?

Example, to transmit electric power without wires would be terrific. It's done on a small scale to charge hearing aid batteries. Probably being expanded to larger scale applications. Can you further this?

You don't have to start fresh on your own. You might team up with a partner or small business.
