QPSK Modulation without using Simulink

Hi,

I am planning to code QPSK modulation technique. I have referred many codes online and found that many are using complex representation to generate QPSK modulated signal. I dont understand that Part. Why we need to represent QPSK signal in complex numbers? Please help me understanding concept.
