Thanks, I see what you mean, by the way, are nested calls ok in MPASM for pic18f65k22?
I assume its 31 nested calls allowed as per page 89 of the datasheet ?

Yes that is correct, but if you, as a beginner to asm, are already getting close to that many it suggests your programming methods need improving.
As the text says, don't forget to allow for any interrupts that also use the stack.
