apologies - but I think under the chips is pretty definitive - as to useless - more a label for the probing technique, for RF it's always on the pins - not with half a mile of gnd lead picking up the current induced voltages in the supply leads and other noise ...

actually - a solid RF gnd all the way back to the power supply would have just about got round your interesting probing technique ...
