And wow, the PICs are more than twice as expensive in India as they are here in Bangladesh.

Tahmid, This is the hard reality, thats why we started with 8051. PIC18F series or 16F87Xa is too costly for a newbie here. 8051 is like our first LOVE. Very hard to forget.:-D
 

Well the thing is , if a person is just stepping into the WORLD OF MICROCONTROLLERS , 8051 is undoubtedly the best choice and its my personal experience , the more things you interface with a controller - the more you learn about the difference in theoretical and practical aspects . . .
