Based on your reports, it's probably something on the motherboard that switches the input voltage between the adapter and the battery. I think that would explain the results you've been seeing. It seems to have started with the battery side and now is also on the adapter side.
Of course if you send it in for repair all they will do is replace the motherboard and probably toss the old one in a landfill. :-(
As an FYI, you know I'm not a laptop engineer or laptop technician, so I'm primarily just basing my replies on lots of experience debugging problems in systems I've worked on, so for all I know I could be way off base as to the root cause of your problem.
