GDTs do have a limited lifetime but it is more related to the number of times they have "flashed" than how old they are. Each time they operare a small amount of electrode is evaporated and condenses on the internal walls. Over time it reduces the effective distace between electrodes or introduces a new electrode between the originals and so reducing the breakdown voltage. Maybe your scope has had a hard life!
