How to connect Freewheeling Diode across Relay

Hello,
I want to connect Freewheel Diode across Relay. Relay having total 5 connection NC,NO,Common,Device1,+12V.
so where i have to connect Relay. According to me it is connected in between +12V & Device1 in reverse way that is (Cathode - +12V) & (Anode-Device1).
Tell me the concept of Freewheel diode & Tell me the connection because i Am using this concept first time in my project.
 


OK Now the connection between Relay & Freewheeling Diode is correct
