Hello all.

A magnetic loop antenna used in very wide band 50 to 600MHz reception has two ends. None is ground. A coaxial cable attached to the core on one side and a shield on the other.



At the receptor end; the shield conductor is connected to the front end chassis.

The same loop antenna for reception... If the loop ends are connected to a 'bal' side of a balun and the 'unbal' end of it to the coaxial ending at the RX front end.

What should perform better, without or with a balun ? Which is lossier ?

A small loop can be analyzed as magnetical antenna if the current along the loop is constant, e.g. if D < lambda/20. In this case symmetric or asymmetric drive doesn't affect antenna behaviour much. Larger loops are acting as loop dipole in the first place and without a balun, the feed line becomes part of the radiating structure.

Needless to say that antenna impedance will be far from 50 ohm for most frequencies in both cases.

Impedance ??? Impedance at what frequency ?

Feed line radiates ? It is a receiving-only antenna.
