hi guys

I have both WinXP and CentOS linux installed on my laptop and I do dual boot from the grup .. everything is fine at this level ..

Now my WinXP is troubling me like crazy .. and I'm thinking of formatting its partition .. What will happen to the linux ? will I still be able to load it ?

what should I do to reinstall the new WinXP to the formatted partition ? .. please give me steps to how to acheive that with Zero risk to my linux OS ..

Regards

Hi
If you reinstall your WinXP, then your linux OS can not boot.
But don't worry. You can fix your linux OS with your linux system disk. I have not use CentOS, but I think the step will be similar:
when you have reinstalled your WinXP, insert your linux system disk, reboot, set BIOS boot from CDROM.when linux is setup, type rescue to boot. Then you can use grub-install (hd0,0) command to rewrite MBR. after that reboot, then your can see your boot menu as before.

See more about grub-install you can search on Google.

Hope it will help you.

Re: WinXP/Linux dual boot : How to format & reinstalling

What do you mean by Linux System Disk ? .. do you mean the linux installation CDs that I used when I installed the linux ? ..

Yes, I mean the linux installation CDs. (but not live CDs)

This means that I will format and install my WinXP normally as if there is no Linux is existing on my PC ..
After everything is OK with XP, I can then install the grup using Linux setup CDs .. is this the correct order ?

Yes.
you must be careful. Do not format the linux partition. and which the disk partition of your WinXP has been installed you must know.

"Do not format the linux partition" linux partition can not show in winxp
serch in edabord "grub" you found many ans. for recover Grub
