I purchased a secondhand PC several weeks ago which has Windows 11 installed. Several days ago, I typed a draft Word document. I tried to edit it 2 days ago & again today. Both times a pane came up saying "You can only view this document. You do not have permission to Edit it". How do I solve this issue? Any assistance will be appreciated.

* Right-clock the application, select Run as Administrator. Possibly permissions include the admin.

* Right-click on the doc, select Properties. Look at 'Permissions'. See if you can change permissions to include your user account.

* Is the doc saved in any format which discourages or prevents editing? For example, is it PDF? Can you change it to txt?

Hi,

OR .. your WORD / OFFICE license expired.

Klaus

MS wants money. windows 11 does not support word ...etc. for all PCs and wants you to buy it. It allows you to go to office 365 for web based editing. So upload your file to office 365 do your editing and then download back to your PC if needed.

And just to make sure you pay... they have made file management in office 365 a nightmare,,,

Hi,

I´m rather sure ... if you post the complete error message we immediately know what´s going on.

Klaus

The error message is clearly referring to file permissions, not MS Office Word restrictions.
By the way, a number of previous MS Office versions is compatible with Windows 11, e.g. 2010, 2016. MS still offers versions with perpetual license for those who don't like the 365 license model, the latest Office 2024.
Or consider free Libre Office.

Regarding MS office 365 I wanted to be nasty but can't find strong enough words.
My new PC word licence timed out (not informed of temporary word licence from manufacturer) so I went for web based word so called office 365 and it is absolute nightmare... I downloaded Libre Office and it messes up all embedded objects and diagrams...

Sad these big companies acting like parasites to make money in deceptive misleading ways yet they should be forced to pay loyalty to the entire digital design firms for riding their donkey.

We in forum should raise awareness rather than promote their garbage.
