I suppose you'd have to plug in numbers for the particular scenario, to keep within the 'thermal design' charts in their datasheets.
The fact that the vendor is willing to characterise more the second device means that those characterisations and guarantees
may have value for particular customers. Having more value may be one reason the manufacturer may wish to charge more.
Also, sometimes some items are more expensive for non-electronic reasons (e.g. the market may be willing to pay more for the
smaller device, or the other one may be less expensive to manufacture). The "electronic" characteristics of a device only partially
influence the cost of a device or product in many cases.
