Why does this CW Transmitter have an diode and not an choke?

I found this modified Cw transmitter, normally it has an Choke to block HF towards the power source but why an diode?

People try all kinds of things. Not every idea is a good one, but that doesn't stop folks from putting it out there.

Maybe using Google picture search would get you to where any design explanation and results measurements sit, that relate?
