Why do some sound cards have hardware buffering?

hi

why does some sound cards have hardware buffering,whike there is software buffering
 

Sound cards

A large hardware buffer makes it much easier to maintain continuous data flow in a non-real-time operating system such as Windows. A large hardware buffer more easily absorbs irregular data rate from the sound card driver and application. Also, in general, it is more efficient to transfer large blocks of data occasionally, than it is to transfer small blocks of data frequently.

What kind of buffer are you mentioning?
i know some digital part with Hardware-Buffer in order to kill jitter of MCLK
