why common emitter configuration is most widely used as an amplifier
 

because it has suitable bandwidth and gain. other configurations only have bandwidth or gain, but common emitter has both of them.
 

Another important property if compared with common base: Much higher input resistance.
 

  • Common base amplifier: Useful voltage gain, but no current gain.
  • Common collector amplifier: Useful current gain, but no voltage gain.
  • Common emitter amplifier: Useful voltage gain and useful current gain.
