Why are null subcarriers needed in ofdm

Dear all

In an OFDM system why there are Null Sub carriers and also can i use these as data sub carriers and increase my data rate

Please let me know

The are used for Band guarding, DC carrying and sometimes facilitate frequency offset estimation.
