SSL vs. WTLS

Hi,

I have to transmit some data over GSM. The data should be encoded and here comes my question. Is it better to use the common protocol SSL for encoding or is it better to use WTLS? The transport will be via GPRS and I am afraid that SSL absorps too much bit rate. Is it possible to use WTLS without WAP?
