Which one is better .NET or JAVA for the application desktop software ?

Please any one suggest me which one is better .NET or JAVA for the application desktop software as well as system software.
 

vb.net

Both are quite widely used but in my opinion, .NET is the more suitable and has a larger developer base. With the .NET2 express edition which is free, things become better.
