which is the best compiler or IDE for MSP430f series microcontrollers

HI all,
I want to know which is the best suitable IDE or C Compiler for MSP430f series microcontrollers.

Hello!

It depends on your budget.
Beside this, suitable for what?

I'm using IAR which can be for sure classified among the best, but
it's quite expensive.

as i know code composer suite CCS core edition is free of charge, besides it supports all family member of MSP430 controllers and C2000 microprocessors.
I strongly recommend you to go for.

I have used IAR for MSP microcontrollers but it is not very user friendly and mature, the future versions might be better.

i will go for code composer suite CCS core edition.
 

Hello!

Be aware that CCS core is limited to 16k executable.
If you want something really free, you may consider Eclipse + MSPGCC.

It all depends on what you to do with it.
For professional use it would be convenient if there's good support and that the application is robust.
For amateur/home use a free compiler like GCC/Eclipse is great.

I have used all sorts of IDE's/Compilers and they all have their pros/cons.
We have used the Keil uVision and had lots of problems with stability.
We switched to IAR and this was a lot better for our purposes.
I don't want to say it is perfect, but support is excellent.

Many IDE's/Compilers have evaluation versions so I would say, check them out!

As I consider IAR as one of the best (if not THE best), I would be curious:
1. What version are you using?
2. What makes you think it's not user-friendly? And mature?

Beside this, MSPGCC is a free solution. But as all free stuff, you will pay back
by spending time on install process. But if you're a student and have a lot of
time to spend on it, it's clearly the best solution.

Now if you are a professional, CCE, IAR and CrossWorks are 1-click
install. You just install and use it, and if you didn't forget to plug the target,
it works out of the box.


To the manager of this forum: would it be possible to make a FAQ about IDE for
microcontrollers (or a sticky post). That's a very recurrent question. We have 2 questions
of the same type, one for pic and one for MSP430, but having a sticky post or a wiki
about it would certainly help...
