I think the answer much depends from the frequency you are working with. If you work below 1 GHz, microstrip components could be cumbersome and thus occupy a lot of room on the PCB.
The big advantage of microstrip, in my opinion, is that you can easily obtain non-standard inductance values, and this could be a real challenge in RF filters.
If %5 of your wavelength exceeds the component size you can use Microstrip or other alternatives. Your operating frequency is not high you can use ceramic , smd components.
