When transmit signal over a long line using diff signal, what would be the maximum attenutation allowable in db?

I guess it would be different in different standard such as RS485, RS422 ...

How can you find out how much attenutation in db you can tolerate? What would be the criteria?

It depends upon the receiving circuit. There is a minimum signal level it will work on. There is also the pulse distortion problem which depends upon the line characteristics and the sending speed. This distortion plus the hysteresis in the line receiver will change the pulse widths at the output of the receiver.
