Hi

UPS usually hires inverter stage inside, to convert DC supply (e.g. batteries) into AC power connected to the load. However, an UPS does not have to consist only inverter. Some UPS modules (e.g. on-line versions) should have rectifiers to charge batteries from outlet power. this is know as double-conversion:

Outlet --> Battery--> AC power to Load

UPS deliver more filtered output and are more stable
They also have internal storage of charge using passive components
so they did not take any switching time, so they deliver constant power even at time of power failure.

an Inverter is designed for heavy Load
and they take time when switching from one mode to other (AC to Battery)
so they are not able to supply continuously power at the time of switching

generally speaking;

UPS, uninteruptable power supply, maintains a supply of power to it's outlet, regardless of it's input status. It usually does this by storing a DC source in a battery array.

an 'inverter' is a term that typically is applied to a chopper based circuit that simulates an AC sinsodial waveform from a DC source.

The UPS may employ an inverter section to provide this simulated AC to it's output.
