What's the Best Linux For EDA tools ?
Is it Debian , Mandrake , Suse Or RedHat ?!

Redhat is the reference for all tool vendors. However, if you are willing to "dig" a little bit you can find solutions for your favourite distribution.

I use Redhat7.3, major EDA all can be supported.

It must be Redhat. Many EDA company,such as Cadence, offically support this linux platform only.

I think you can use what version you like.
I have use ldd to see these soft use what
glibc function, the glibc like the dll file of windows.if the glibc is above the version glibc2.2.*,you may need some ibc_compate** file.You may find in you linux cdrom or in internet,but i don't try this.

Somethiong about Redhat Linux upgrade

Hello.


So far, I have been using Windows based EDA tools.

I am beginning to explorer the power offered by Linux. I chose Redhat Linux 7.3 distribution. I have soome newbies questions.


Q1. Do I need to upgrade my Linux installation with the latest upgrade packages for this 7.3 release? Is there a readme on how to upgrade these packages on an existing Linux installation?

Q2. Where do I find the upgrades for Redhat Linux 7.3?

www.redhat.com holds updates (mainly bug fixes) for all RedHat Linux versions.

Red Hat is the reference for most of the Linux software vendors. The 7.3 release is very stable, so you could use this for working without any problem.
If you want to learn a lot about your system, Debian is a beautiful option.

In my case Redhat 7 got les driver support for my Hardware so

i tryed Redhat 9 and it works for that stuff I got .

I think its just a try worth . New Kernel, more Drivers , New KDE ,.,.,.,.,

Redhat or National clones (with updating system)
I use ASP ( **broken link removed**) & work with
Quartus-II v 3.0 under Linux and ModelSim
with win4lin use MentorGraphics Expedition (WG2002) and MaxPlus-II (10.2)

All OK

PS in newer versions of RH locales with utf-8 is not good

slackware 9 with eda works well!!!

Slackware 9 is good for eda!!!

It's drawing speed is faster than in redhat 7.3/9.

If these libs not found in system - more programms not working yet.

it seems fine.
But when screensaver is turned on, it is easy to hang...

R1. Look at the EDA tool vendor´s website, and look for the recommended patchlevel. This is the same as for windose, you should stick to the vendors recommendation about service-pack.


Q2. Where do I find the upgrades for Redhat Linux 7.3?
R2. the up2date tool is available from the start menu. In the default redhat gnome-taskbar, an up2date applet a flashes a _big_ _red_ _exclamation mark_ icon when you have updates available. There again, the exact same thing as with winXP, except in more obvious.

Q1. Did you ever log in a redhat box ?

So far I see no problem using Redhat 9 for EDA in my system.

For system hang with Screen Saver, it seems caused by one or more of patterns. You could turn off the Screen saver or just pick up few of them from the list and have a simple test, the problem gone after that.
