What readout do smart meters give in UK/EU?

Hi,
Domestic single phase smart meters in UK./EU...what readout do they give to the house owner?
That is, if the house owner goes up to the smart meter, can they see a reading there and then?
What reading is it?
Presumably the reading they can see is the average power over the last 5 minutes (or something like this?)

..Or is it the average power drawn between some time interval? If so, which?

'Smart' energy meter ones being modern, chances are they show a digital LCD readout.

The figure should be accumulated KiloWatthours; which is what you pay at the end of month compared (substracted) to the earlier month KWh reading. No averaging or instantaneous consumption at the moment unless there is a moving arrow or dots somewhere else on the display telling the power (not energy!) passing trough the meter. My meter displays also an arrow with direction of the current trough it as it is a "NET" meter. (Consumption from or injection into the grid).
If you have a picture of your electric energy meter, perhaps we can tell its particularities. Also check if its manufacturer posts on the web details about it.
