The leakage current is caused by minority carriers. It exists in all semiconductor devices. What is the direction of this current? lets take example of a IC say... 555 timer. It is built of numerour BJT transistors. Shall the leakage current flow out of the device package or into the package?

The leakage current of each pn-junction flows in the direction of applied voltage. To determine the leakage current of a specific pin, you need to know the chip technology and involved junctions.

Many pins will be leakage balance between competing and
dissimilar (either species or topology) devices. There is no
generalization to be made about leakage current direction
or scale, without understanding that level of detail, pin by
pin.
