difference between twi and i2c protocol

This is the same protocol. Some manufacturers like one name (Atmel uses TWI) other (Philips I2C). They are synonyms.

twi phillips

"I2C" is registered trademark of Philips. So other manufacturers which have I2C support in their hardware mention it as "TWI".
