String theory is a proposition maintaining that there are N dimensions. N=> 4
3-d and time. The energy transfer in the three dimensions with time used to measure the rate is visible to us. But when we are looking at the dark matter (we can't look actually) this phenomenon of transfer happens so quickly that no machie we have built so far ca detect it. Hence we assume the other dimensions b/w which the energy of dark matter is exchanged are intertwined to form a string. These strings of dimensions link one universe to another. That is this theory depends on an assumption that we exist in a labyrinth of universes or a multiverse.
If you google for Bianchi spaces you may get an idea of how theoretical physicists are trying to prove the existance of multiple dimensions.
