Before DSP Processors/Microprocessor stage in digital signal processing, we need to amplify the raw weak
signal to extract useful data.

What is role of ASIC which is a semi custom IC in signal conditioner stage ?

The signal could be bio or industrial sensor electrical output.

Each situation is different, requiring a custom approach in making an application-specific IC. I read of a designer telling about high customer expectations, as to how much can be fit on one chip. They often ask him "Can we include this function, and another function, and another function, and...?"

I'd be surprised if an IC can be built to serve all purposes such that it handles every type of sensor and extracts every kind of useful data.

Bio sensors might be hooked up to living creatures. They might be different from industrial sensors in regard to grounding arrangements, noise suppression, high vs low voltage, etc.

Describe the properties of the signal you need to condition to feed to A/D DSP block.
Frequency, amplitude, harmonic considerations, accuracy (absolute or relative),
resolution......

Regards, Dana.

Are you talking about a hypothetical (yet to design) or an existing system?

Custom IC comes into play if the product is manufactured in large quantities or you have very specific requirements and costs don't matter.
