What is meant by Intersymbol interference? (ISI)

due to the constraints in bandwidth, or filters available in transmitter and receivers
the transmission bandwidth of a bit or symbol becomes limited. this means that this symbol or bit has an infinite time representation. Considering that each bit has an infinite duration it is clear that these symbols interfer to each other.
