What is "backed off efficiency" for PA ?

pa backed off

Probably the PAE when the output power is 1 dB to 3 dB lower than P1dB. This really only applies to class AB. The efficiency gets worse as drive is backed off since the transistor is biased at a quiescant point.
 

This figure shows that the efficiency of class A, AB, and B amplifiers falls off rapidly as back off increases.
