auto neg

Hi,
I have a basic doubt on auto negotiation. Can some pls provide some ptrs on this ?

Once autonegotiation is completed and link status is up, do still FLPs are keep getting exchanged between the two links , so as to know if peer is going down, then there will not be any FLPs from that device for certain duration and peer would detect remote failure?
Or is it that FLPs are exchanged only during autoneg process for the link to be up ? In that case, how is peer notified about link change ?

What happens when autoneg is OFF in this case ? Is there any signal exchanged still , just as a keep alive msges ?

Thanks in advance.
