plasmonics are a density waves of electron which is produced on the surface of a nano metal when light interact with it . It is one of the electromagnetic property of nano metals.
actually light will not interact with any matter which is less than its wavelength because of its property of diffraction. But it goes entirely wrong cause it is capable of interacting with metals at nano scale .
when light falls on the surface of nano metal, excitation of electon results in producing large number of electrons (plasmons) , which converts that light energy in electrical pluse which has only short life span , eventually converts back into light .
presently research is going on on using this plasmons for high speed data transmission, more over its subwavelength is small so that it occupies only less space , so if it is developed this would replace optical fibres !! but the greatest disadvantage is that it is not stable not even in millimetres!!
