what does "maximum Internal shunt current" means

Hi,

I'm designing a battery controller system and I found this chip "LTC4071" and it says that has a 50mA maximum internal shunt current. Does that means that if my system needs more than 50mA i shouldn't use the chip?

This chip operates by always drawing a fixed current from the source, some of which it either delivers to the battery or shunts to ground internally. If you set it up so that the charging current is above 50mA, then the chip won't be able to shunt it down to zero when wanted, at least not without burning itself up. So yes, your practical charging current is limited to 50mA.
