What are the small patches surrounding the antenna for?

Does anyone knows what is the irregular shape PCB patches surrounding the antenna in the schematic for? I know there's a slot antenna + bowtie antenna in the photo but I'm not sure what's those small patches are for.

Patches like that are generally used for tuning - the original design is tested then copper is either added or subtracted in the area of the antenna in order to maximize efficiency, this is generally done in the lab by hand, using a long stick with the pieces of copper on the end - it is unusual to see it incorporated in a final spin instead of reconfiguring the antenna, but whatever works!
