A metamaterial (or meta material) is a material that gains its properties from its structure rather than directly from its composition. To distinguish metamaterials from other composite materials, the metamaterial label is usually used for a material that has unusual properties. Such unusual properties could be a negative refractive index or infinite inertia (which are not found in naturally occurring materials).
