what actually do we mean by any particular technology?such as 90 nm,180 nm or 16 nm .

we are familier with 90 nm ,180 nm technology .......what does it actually mean?does it mean gate length only?or some thing else?plz clarify my doubts......
 

As jeet said, it the means minimum channel length that can be fabricated. We see 90nm, 65nm, 45nm, 32nm, 22nm technology nodes. These technology nodes are decided by dividing the previous node by square root of 2. So that number of components remains the same even after reducing the area by a factor of 2 (because length is divided by square root of 2 so area will be divided by 2
 
please post any link to show exactly which channel length is getting referred here....
It will be really helpful if there are diagrams...:lol:
