I would like to use NFC transmitters with about 5 meters practical working range (to a smart phone with built in NFC receiver), that's about 100 times the normal NFC range. Has anyone heard of "long range NFC"?

Is it feasible for a newbie hobbyist to build a prototype long range NFC transmitter using a standard NFC module? And what would be needed to increasing its signal strength a lot? Different antenna, more electric power, a new NFC module from scratch?

How does one achieve radio signal strength variability using a standard radio module? Maybe connecting a passive attenuator with a varistor to the antenna?

I'd be grateful for any ideas or hints to information resources about this.
