Using parallel port for input bits

Can anyone plz tell me if there is any restriction in using a parallel port for inputting 8 bits of data.
 

no there is no problem in that.... the only thing is you gotta know which line to strobe with a high or low signal using the PC to make it input the signal given by us....
 

The original PC parallel port wasn't bidirectional, so the only input bits were the five status pins. Later machines have enhanced modes that can input from the eight data pins.

Remember that most modern operating systems won't allow a user-mode program to directly access I/O ports. You may need a special port access driver.

how can i get special port access drivers.
Secondly i am getting 8 bits from an ADC0804 to my PC....
Plz elaborate
