USB peripheral interfacing + TCP/IP

My project is to build a fingerprint scanner system using the following components:
- fingerprint scanner and smart card reader module (USB connection)
- keypad
- LCD module
- TCP/IP capabilities

Complete commercial products with the above specs are available in the market with a very high price tag (about USD2000 in indonesia). But the prices of those separate components are not so high (a fingerprint scanner may cost only USD160).

In order to integrate those components into one single system, we had two kinds of approach:
1. building a microcontroller based system to interface the USB fingerprint scanner to the rest of the system and to add TCP/IP capabilities.
2. use a miniature CPU with complete USB host and TCP/IP functionalities.

The latter seems easier, but we are confronted with the fact that such products (miniature CPUs) are not yet available in a cheap price, especially in our region.

So we are looking at the first option: building our own embedded system. Therefore i want to ask:
1. What are the easiest way to use USB peripherals without a computer?
2. What are the easiest way to implement a microcontroller based USB host?
3. What ere the simplest way to add TCP/IP functionality to a microcontroller based system? I have heard about EDTP's Packet Whacker, but how about using an ISA LAN Card? is it the same?

Hi,
Y do you need a USB for this. The data is really small and the effort involved in making a USB compatible host is too much. This is IMHO.

I think this is a good choice. Are you sure it only costs $89? Where do you get this product? Directly from Atmel?

Suggested reseller price for module is 89$ (for 40 qty. order). So, this is a good estimation. You should contact your local Atmel representative (or distributor) to get quotes for sample qty.

i would go for embeded modules e.g. dimm pc

No fingerprint scanner, no TCP/IP. $160. How it is better than the one from Atmel, which has everything included for this project for only $89?

I contacted a distributor in Singapore (there are none in Indonesia), and they sell the biometric evaluation kit for US$2000!!!!!!!! I don't know how much is the module itself, but Digi-Key sells such evaluation kits for only US$623.7, and US$99.9 for the module only.

Anyone knows any other Atmel distributor in my region? (there's only one distributor in singapore which is mentioned in their website: Nucleus Electronics)

Btw, does anyone have any experience using Atmel's fingerchip biometric module, especially the AT77SM0101BCB02VKE module??[/b]

There is also Atmel office in Singapore. It has the same address with Nucleus, but different phones (65) 6844-3006. Try to contact them.

I would suggest to use ready scanner/recognition library. We use one from Neurotechnologija. It is pretty simple, cheap and good quality and supports scanner modules from Atmel.

This is a thesis about TCP/IP + USB.

Why don't just build with your own board? Buy each module of thing and combine together.

We decided to buy a fingerprint sensor from Fujitsu. We still had difficulties to buy Atmel's sensors. The Fujitsu sensor uses a capacitive sensor, which i think has lower reliability the Atmel's, but what should i say? I just cant get the atmel sensor for the moment

Now i have to make a TCP/IP implementation by my own
