Hello, does anyone know where I can get information, schematics etc to design USB flash drives?

Any help appreciated,
Roland.

Basically you need a large Flash memory and a controller.

You should check out the USB spec for storage devices.

How does one design a device that uses a Compact Flash card for data storing and then can abstract the stored data into a recognizable file system by Windows when connected through USB. Exactly like digital cameras do.

you have to make the device compatible with the Storage Class spec.
Then your device will be automatically recognized as drive for all
Win OS > Win98.
The Class Spec tells which requests are neccessary to support.
Philips as a example for that using the PDIUSB12.

do you have a link to that Philips appnote?

I assume that the filesystem is OS independent and that the specific driver actually does the conversion, but can the device be made to exist as two instances, where one instance is another application and the other is the storage instance?

I also saw some mcu's for this project in Cypress. They sent me a bulletin of these mcu's. Please check : www.cypress.com

Let me explain further, I have a colleague that wishes to use a flash drive (similar to the USB plug in sticks) with a few slight modifications, to update software in the main processor of his equipment.

As the software gets updated quite often, this is thought to be the best method.

What he wants to do is have some additional circuitry on it to boot from it and automatically start data transfer to the equipment.

Size is not an issue as 16mb would suffice, however more is always welcome.

Roland.

P.S. personally I have no idea about how to do this, its over my head...

There are a few companies that have app notes describing usb flash drives.
Have a look at Cypress and ST websites where you can download schematics/firmware for mass storage device class.

This is 'OTI' usb flash controller spec. and schematic.

It may be help to someone.

hi,

what's the available sizes of USB flash drive in MBs and the corresponding prices in the market.

please include the minimum prices of the USB flash drives especially China made.

if you can please write the price in American $$s.

Thanks in Advance........

Currently the available sizes of USB flash drive are from 8MB to 1GB.

I think the price of the each size is very different as the vendor.
From $10 to 300$ ???

Hi
I think using www.jungo.com is useful for software help and in analog devices site you will find an example with schematic and pcb has used USB2 CY7C68013.
If you can't find it I can send it for you.

There's a total solution including shematic and code on the download aera of our website. circuit is simple but programming needs skills to ensure stable and fast.
