Resistors are one of the most fundamental electronic components, used to control current flow in a circuit. They are rated by resistance (ohms, Ω), power dissipation (watts, W), and tolerance (%). The color bands on through-hole resistors indicate their resistance value. Have you ever wondered how to choose the right resistor for your circuit? Let’s discuss!

Any link or documentation to help readers of this complex subject so we get ready to discuss.

If you are serious...

The value is chosen so it does what it is required to do.
The tolerance is picked so it does it at the extreme possibilities of the value spread.
The power rating is chosen so it doesn't overheat when doing it's job.

Ohms law works out all three.

There are different resistor constructions, each with slightly different properties but again, you choose the type best suited to the job.
