"This was a hot topic about a year ago when I wrote this but felt it was to political at the time to publish. Now that a year has passed, and my previous Verification Manager is off in India contributing to the exportation of jobs out of the USA, my conscience is telling me it is now acceptable. "
......

I have heard stories of people in the US going back to their home countries and keeping their jobs, only in a lower cost of living area. I do not know if their salaries were reduced as well. At least they are closer to their relatives and have more pleasant living conditions.

I just talked to a guy i met in a company that i used to do some consulting work ..He told me that all the american engineers were laid off
with the exception of the indians .. I got puzzled ,then he explained ...
well they are going back to india and train the people that are going to take over ..he said just a transition TEAM ... .. then he got very angry and he went overboard saying RACIAL non sense !
i only said :
Is greed the enemy not a Particular race

A simple analysis for me is not very obvious for others..!

If you guys want to really understand(not just know the truth in a superficial level) the real myth behind the scenes, let me tell you more on this according to my true experience.

I still remember the days dated back in 1997 when I was attending the ceremony of my sister's graduation ceremony at SJSU, a guest speaker(The VP of Selectron Corp), who is an American Japaness said that We should not prevent the jobs from being given to those immigrants from India, China, Japan, Or whatsoever, because the North America is still part of the Earth, the global town of all the human beings, and if you can study and work harder, you will be treated well and maybe better than those minor immigrants who had already suffered a lot trying to adapt themselves to this new land. The speaker himself even told us some of the stories full of diffculties when he first came to the US when he was 14 years old.

Right now almost 7 years has passed, and I am still remembering his words and part of his speech. The fact is that the worry about losing jobs to the Indians, Chinese, Japaness, etc. in the land of US has grown bigger and bigger, even worse, the jobs are moving out of US, in other words, the American are competing with those invisiable competetors who were actually at the other side of the earth!!!

If you guys really know what kind of a battle this game is about, then you will undoubtedly and immediately make the conclusion that the loser will be the US for sure!

I will let you know how much $$$ the employer will pay for an ASIC designer in India or China for the same kind of work load and complexity you guys are doing in the US, and you guys will be able to judge whether you should worry about your job security in the next 5-10 years before you earn enough $ to retire!

Hi sweesm
I have seen that in last two years my hometown has dramaticaly changed .. people in general don't smile anymore , they are now very agressive .. life has become very hard for all ,, Is not just the engineering area taht is depressed . .. But all .People now get pay $8 an hour. I have an mechanical engineer friend who works now is a gas station ... yes pumping gas ! . Well regarding your VISON of a global
town ... is not really true yet,, The fact is than in my state if you drive witout insurance and get cought you go to jail ..the fact is that for a minor visit to a hospital ithey charge you $7000 .. The fact is that in order to bearly survive now in a norhamerican CITY .. you need to make at leat $14 an hour ..i said survive .. pay gas .. pay electricity ...But THERE ARE NO $14 jobs anymore.. There are so many people without jobs ,that a lot are willing to accept $8 and less . The employers know it vey well .. if you protest they kick you out .there are plenty of people willing to get that position .. What to me is umbearable is the absence of social mouvements to protest for this !
So you see if those jobs leave the US it will be impossible to compete in the same terms.. Is only great for the companies .Talking about companies ..I went for a training at XILINX a week ago . The place was beautiful .. like a modern CATHEDRAL . built with good taste.. But it was a lonly place .It really impacted me the place look like a HAUNTED HOUSE.
The same person that i was talking to up there .. said to me this goberment has desunited us all americans . So as you see my friend .. The world is a town is a BAD SLOGAN .. is used by companies to promote services. Once again i have said it many times ,... in the US the only field where there is consistent hiring is in the weaponry industry .The high tech killing is very profitable industry .. massacreing human beings is a good bussines!!
Unfortunatly for some of us it goes against our little principles !

Hi, guys, i' m a chinese.
As I know, to be an ASIC Engineer here in China, even the highest living expense cities like Shanghai, ShenZhen, the salary, or let's say the cost of a company for a hi-tech employee, is nearly 1/4 of a one in US.
This attracts many companies and individuals to set up their new branch/startup here. This enables the products to compete with others by lower and lower price as well.
In short, if I was a boss who wants to set up a hi-tech company, no matter sw or hw, i'd do the same, put it in china or india.

Dear friends,
I am a doc. student at Iran. I have a lot of my friends in US or Canada, and a lot of family there, so i possibly know the situation there. the fact is that you all may not know the situation in countries such as india, iran or china. it is a huge cultural, economical and political difference here. as i know, i have now scientific working of about 15 hours a day, with no mony at all!. i must work half part as graphist or webdesigner or programer to be alive!. thus, u c that it is possible to work soo hard, without any financial benefits. i know that this is not a nice situation, but it is the life, and i love it, even i may not continue the eficiency for long, but i'm still standing here, and if sometime i come to US (maybe for postdoc), the situation will be surely better, as the case for my friends there. thus, the guys there should compete with this kind of people :(. u sey there u earn 8$ an hour, we get 2$ an hour here, for same work. so, let us care about our principals, doing and being great, with all its hardship.

as Shamloo (a persian poet) sed:
human is hardship of pension

your friend, murti

Hi Eltonjohn:

I totally agree with you. And I'd like to share more of my vision on this issue.

First of all, let me confirm that the figures about salary as pointed by yeewang was 100% ture.
The salary of a junior IC Design Enginner with a MSEE is around $60,000 USD upon graduation while a Chinese Engineer in Shanghai with 3-4 years of experience is only about $15,000 USD.
That is a roughly 1/4 ratio of a cost saving. It is definitely an attraction to those cruel employers!

Second, the cost of almost all the EDA tools is almost ZERO! I have gone to several websites where the selling price for Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor, etc.. are only $10 USD, Yes, $10 USD, not even worth the material cost of the CDR itself in the US!!!

If you were the employer, where do you think you want to locate your branches?

If you are a personal investor of an IC design house, what will you do? Will you Keep burning cash in States while all your competitors relocated their working force to cut their cost?

States kept edges on so many fields: CPUs, graphic controller, spec. definition, sales, marketing, HW/SW integration..... and all the high end markets. In this dynamic electrical world, it's so bad that engineers need to be more dynamic than 20 years ago to keep themselves survived.
