Transmit amplifier in compression???

Hello there...

I don't know much about amplifiers, so I appreciate anyone's input.

I read somewhere that "transmit amplifier typically run into compression to improve efficiency."

I'm wondering as to why is that... isn't an amplifier more efficient in the linear gain region???

Thanks for any help I can get!
