How to determine output and onput characteristics of transistor in given mode? I am confused about what versus what graph displays output characteristics of given particular transistor (same confusion about input characteristics). For example in common emitter npn transistor IC Vs VCE graph shows output characteristics, but why IC Vs VCE? Please explain how to determine that for both input and output characteristics?
 

The first characteristic is of course, the exponential relationship inherent in the device.
The plot of IC versus VBE with the assumption that the collector voltage is constant and no lower than the base voltage.
As,Ic is independent of VCE; thus,different values of VCE do not alter the characteristic.

Next, we examine IC for a given VBE but with VCE varying.
The characteristic is a horizontal line because IC is constant if the device remains in the active mode (VCE > VBE). On the other hand, if different values are chosen for VBE, the characteristic moves up or down.

The two plots constitute the principal characteristics of interest in most analysis and design tasks.
 

Perhaps you shuld try to be somewhat more clear in your question. What do really want to ask us?

I want to know how to determine which graph shows output and input characteristics of transistor in particular mode and why that graph only. See in CE npn transistor Ic vs Vce graph shows output characteristics of that transistor but why that graph? Similarly for CB pnp transistor Ic vs Vbc graph shows output characteristics in that mode. How do you determine this?
 

Output characteristic is the relation of output current (Ic) and output voltage (Vce), for specified constant values of other parameters, e.g. temperature and Vbe or Ib.

Which other graphs do you imagine to represent output characteristic?
