Currently I have a protable device project which is using the Maxium MAX8606. In the design, it put an On Semi NCP346SN overvoltage protection IC between the AC/DC adaptor and the MAX8606. This is to protect the MAX8606 from the transient voltage generated from the AC/DC adaptor in various situation. I read from the MAX8606 datasheet and found that the absolute max. voltage is 16V, but the application note did not mention an input overvoltage protection device is needed. In fact, I want to know if the On Semi NCP346SN is really needed? Does the MAX8606 deal with the transient voltage in different situation?
