The supply voltage of car batteries now and in the past

Hi friends,

How much is the supply voltage of a private car battery in the old days? How about nowadays?? How about in the future??? Is there any difference in battery supply voltage between a private car and a truck??

In the early days 6 V was common then 12 V was common. In trucks 24 V is frequently found.

Vehicle manufaturers are planing to increase the current standard voltage (12V) to 48V. This is because of the amount of looses that occur due to the ohmic resistances of the wires. You know higher voltages can go more far away that the lower ones. By increasing the voltage you can move more amounts of energy by having less currents (This is why electricity provider networks do across the country by increasing the voltage to 100000 Volts !), this way you will have lower dissipation (P=V*I), where by increasing the voltage with a fixed wire resistance you will have much lower current pasisng by. Tihs way the final amout of dissipated power (Due to the wire resistance) will lower gradually. This mayl need using of the DC/DC converters in the consumer side ,cause many of the prepherials are powered by 5V nowadays.

Private cars uses 12V battery nowadays, trucks usually 24V. Mainly due to the engine size, because as you know the battery is primarily used for starting the engine.
As for increasing the battery size, I am not sure, because it might address the voltage drop problem in the line, but of course other devices such as horn, lights etc will be affected too.

The open-circuit voltage of an automotive lead-acid battery is roughly 2.1V/cell. For a six cell battery this is about 12.6V. When there is current being drawn from the battery, the voltage will be lower than 12.6V and the amount of decrease depends on how much current current is drawn. In a running vehicle, with a correctly-functioning alternator, you should see a voltage around 14V on the battery. This assumes that the alternator is able to generate enough current to supply the power demand of the loads and has enough extra to charge the battery.
