Hi Yeah you are correct the primitive polynomial u can find out using matlab pp = primpoly(16,'min'); for GF(2^16) and similarly for GF(2^14) pp= primpoly(14,'min').
Actually u can use any polynomial for calculation you just need to find the root of ELP(error loc polynomial) using Chien search. But ELP needs to be presented in some sort of GF representation.
