the definition of the undershoot

What is undershoot? Is it the negative of overshoot? Or is it means the rising and/or falling edges do not reach high or low level within the first half of the
unit interval? Or both these two cases can be called undershoot?

It is negative overshoot.
 

a system will oscillate during its transient period.i mean at that time,output will take positive and negative..if we looked at the values it will be continuously decearsing value..ie first it will attain a max positive value and then a negative value which is certainly less than positive value..further next output goes to positive which woll be less than previous positive and negative values...the first negative value is undershoot

Added after 8 minutes:

also, system may attain first value as a negative value i mean it will undershoot after that it will overshoot..correct me if i am wrong
 

Undershoot and Overshoot occur during transience, which is a short duration of time when the signal is ringing or oscillating at a mismatched load. Both Overshoot and Undershoot take reference to the load voltage in a perfectly matched condition. The net value of incident signal (peak amplitude) minus the reflecting signal (peak amplitude) is below the reference is defined as Undershoot. Likewise, the net value above the reference is defined as Overshoot.
