I suggest you to use a "Live" version before installing a complete linux system.
I have tried , and I can recommend you, two differents distributions, but based on the same roots: "KNOPPIX" and "MEPIS"
They are based upon a DEBIAN distribution, which is a bit hard to set up, but the autors make a great work to simplify and evaluate it!
You can download from knopper.net or mepis.com, and after you have burned your cd (a single cd, but with very many packages installed and running, like OpenOffice, mozilla, and very many others), you can try them without installing a single bit on your Hdd! You'll have a COMPLETE linux system up and running in a few seconds!!!
I know that exists also a SUSE live version, but I never tried it.
Ah, If you try them and you see that you like it, you can also install them on your hdd!, it's simple, you click on the icon "install to hdd" on the linux desktop 8)
Of course all of this live version are graphic !
