which is a better book -(or whats the difference between)-The Art of electronics by Paul Horowitz and Winfield Hill and
Student manual for the art of electronics by Thomas C. Hayes and Paul Horowitz.
plz help...i wanna buy one of these!!!i am 2nd year undergrad in electronics.

The Art of Electronics [Hardcover]

The Art of Electronics Student Manual [Plastic Comb]

The first book, hardcover is the complete textbook, while the second book is a study guide/laboratory manual and only contains a subset of the information contained in the hardcover, along with additional exercises and lab experiments.

Buy the first book, the hardcover, if you have to pick between one or the other.

I bought both items about 10 to 12 years ago and couldn't agree more with BigDog's conclusion to buy the book. I would not waste my money on the manual. The manual is basically tied to a laboratory course that was taught at Harvard. I still keep the book handy as a reference. I discarded the manual to reclaim the space it was taking on my bookshelves.

Be aware the book is quite outdated with respect to modern digital electronics and microcontrollers.

I recommend you also "The Art of Electronics [Hardcover]". It is a very good book, and you will never regret about its purchase. Go forward!

is the 3rd edition out?? or is it on the horizon or should i buy the 2nd edition now!!

It depends of your urgency. The 3rd edition was planned for this year 2011, but it is not defined for when,... and maybe could be delayed until 2012.

It depends on you. ;-)

I wouldn't hold your breath. The 3rd edition has been "planned" since 2005 if not before. In 2005 I was told "We're working on it, but there's no "schedule" yet." when I contacted them! I think it will never happen.

I found more updated feedback (from beginning of 2011): :-D

The Art of Electronics 3rd edition - author response

So, they could finally have ready the 3rd Edition for end of 2011; but you never know . If I would be you, and I would not have so much urgency; I will wait until first quarter 2012; and if there is not any update; I will buy the 2nd Ed.

You will read there that in the 3rd Edition the autors will add 5 more chapters. But how much time are you able to wait is something that only you can decide. ;-)

[Even they talk in that post about a South Asia 2nd edition which is so much cheaper than the US/EU edition ;-)]

Hello all,

I just emailed Winfield Hill about the status of the third edition of Art of Electronics and they've finished writing it. They now in typesetting and it should be published by late spring/early summer next year (May 2014).

And it sounds like there will be a second volume to contain all the new material that wouldn't fit in the main work at a future date.

Hello Mr. Hill,

I hope everything is going well for you this year. I wanted to write once again to ask about the progress of the third edition of Art of Electronics. When we spoke last year you said you were planning on cutting off writing new material at some point last year if the writing didn't finish soon. Have you finished writing and moved on to editing yet?

Several people have contacted the publisher and have gotten responses to expect the book sometime around May 2014 (so a manuscript has been submitted and everyone is well into editing), but to me that feels like researcher's saying a new technology, like graphene transistors or brain to pc interfaces, should hit the market in the next 5-10 years. A great image, but not likely.

Where do you see the book in the pipeline? I'd like to share your opinion with the community again.

The complete 15-chapter book has gone through copy-
editing and we're doing our review pass now. Then on
to typesetting (editing of our TEX text, figure placement,
etc) and then galleys, etc. So next spring looks good.

They will be an additional five chapter eXtension
H&H AoE "x-chapter" book following in about a year
with new advance materials.
